Network Management

Developing and Managing a Windows based LAN network

Managing a Windows Network

This project was one carried out as part of my university studies, and looked at network management in a more pracical manner. As such, this project focused on configuring a network involving a Windows Server and Windows client machines inline with a pre-defined brief of functionality, inclduing the installation of appropiate software. Another key element of this project was that it covered practical elemetents such as making and testing my own patch cable, setting up a patch pannel as well as carrying out troubleshooting to identify and then fixing issues, such as an issue I had, which was having one of the client devices having a graphics card failure during the practical.
  • Installed three Windows Vista client and one Windows Server 2008 machines.
  • Installed software, and managed peritherials such as a shared printer, including installing required drivers.
  • Created multiple users and managed permissions using Active Directory.
  • Implemented Group Policies for users within Active Directory.
  • Utilised tools to monitor and manage the network traffic and create alerts.
  • Carried out methodical testing and troubleshooting of hardware and network configurations.
  • Created and tested patch cables for each machine, and managed layer-2 switch.
